Buchanan Computing are pleased to announce four new software systems for traffic and highways, being launched at Traffex/Parkex at the end of March.

Web-based sharing of highway and traffic data

Being shown for the first time at Traffex 2011 is TraffWeb - a range of systems and services to enable parking, collision, and other map-based highway information to be shared throughout an authority or with the public.

TraffWeb is highly configurable and provides a modern map-based interface to all types of highway and traffic data, but with particular close links to ParkMap and AccsMap for on-street parking and road casualty data. It can follow an authority’s style and colour scheme and include their logo. Information may be supplied back to the authority from the public, for example, for consultation responses and reporting defects. It can appear embedded in an authority’s website even when hosted and managed by Buchanan Computing.

Making and managing speed limits, banned turns, and other moving traffic orders

Building upon the success of ParkMap, the most widely used system for managing traffic orders, Buchanan Computing has introduced MovingOrders Map, a companion product to help with speed limits, banned turns, and other measures affecting moving traffic. At Traffex 2011 it will be shown for the first time populated with Ordnance Survey’s road network data and traffic sign images created automatically.

MovingOrders Map was developed from software for speed limits written for Transport for London, but gets most of its information from Ordnance Survey’s ITN data, available to all public authorities. Authorities can use the software to turn this information into draft traffic orders, using either traditional text schedules or maps as the definitive way to identify locations and end points, and ascertain the traffic signs needed. They can then design, advertise, consult upon, make, and keep records of subsequent orders using the facilities built into MovingOrders Map.

Sign design with spell check and DfT x-height formula

Everyone thinks they can spell, but its surprisingly common for traffic signs to be erected with embarrassing mistakes, particularly of place names unfamiliar to those involved. SignPlot 2.6, being launched at Traffex 2011, helps to avoid this by linking to the Microsoft Word spelling dictionary. This has the advantages of being UK-specific, already containing many town and city names, and being easy to add to (both in Word and in SignPlot) for village names, smaller localities, and tourist destinations.

Also new in this version of SignPlot is a simple to use implementation of the DfT formula for calculating a sign’s x-height. All you need to input is the road speed and number of lanes - SignPlot takes care of everything else needed and displays the required lettering size.

New Advanced Analysis Module and new version of AccsMap

At Traffex 2011, the latest version of AccsMap, our well known map-based road casualty analysis system, will be released. The AccsMap v4.5 upgrade will include a plethora of new features, including the ability to easily query multiple causation factors, enhanced printing tools, new bar/pie chart thematics, more flexible polygon queries, and so on. Be one of the first to trial the new version by visiting us on our stand Z2.

At the same time the new Advanced Analysis Module is to be released. This new module builds on the existing features of the Economic Monitoring Module, designed for assessing the cost-effectiveness of your road safety scheme, and offers a range of new analytical tools including advanced Postcode mapping, improved interoperability and export options, ability to add costs to traffic calming measures, and enhanced cost options for First Year Rate of Return reports.
