Road sign takes pride of place at Royal College of Art
SignPlot used for Margaret Calvert's latest work
Buchanan Computing and Route Signs Ltd. have assisted Margaret Calvert, co-designer of the UK system of traffic signs. Margaret was invited to submit a full size sign as one of the definitive artworks to illustrate the achievements of alumnae of Royal College of Arts over the last 175 years.
Margaret has commissioned a new sign based on one of her original cardboard and gouache maquettes, produced for the Worboys Committee on traffic signs in 1963. This has been recreated by Simon Morgan using Buchanan’s SignPlot software (with minor adjustments for historical authenticity) and manufactured using materials appropriate to the time by Route Signs Ltd. Simon commented, ‘It has been very exciting to work again with Margaret and to realise that traffic signs are treated as serious Art by experts at the RCA, fit to be exhibited alongside Lutyens’ architectural drawings and works by Tracey Emin and David Hockney.’
The Royal College of Art’s 175th Anniversary Exhibition: The Perfect Place to Grow is open until 3 January 2013 at RCA, Kensington Gore, London SW7 2EU.
