Amendment to 2016 TSRGD

Corrections to traffic signs regulations just published.

The amendment regulations to correct errors in the 2016 TSRGD were laid before Parliament on 15 November and come into force in England and Wales on 13 December.

The full document is here and more on the main changes in Simon Morgan’s article in Highways here.

Comparing it with the draft of November 2016, it corrects about 8 further errors, mainly ones pointed out by the Institute of Highways Engineers. It also introduces the concept of a “refuge for pedestrians and cyclists” that might be in the middle of a crossing. This is done in order to be clear about when you can use hatching within the controlled area of a crossing (which now includes ‘chevron-filled’ hatching for one-way streets).

In our SignPlot Sign Illumination Tool, we faithfully reproduced the error in TSRGD 2016 that required the diagram 7011 & 7021 series signs for temporary traffic signals to be lit in a 30mph or higher street-lit area. TSRGD has now been corrected, so we have released version 1.01 of the tool (also called ‘SignLit’) to implement this change. It can be downloaded here.

A similar statutory instrument is expected to be laid before the Scottish Parliament in the next few weeks to effect the same changes there.
