Traffic sign design with Buchanan Computing

30 August 2018

SignPlot v3.50 is out!

New versions of the UK’s most popular sign face and sign structure design software make life easier for new and experienced designers, and are complete with all changes needed for the forthcoming Traffic Signs Manual revision.

SignPlot was the first software to address the revised signs regulations when they appeared in 2016, and now becomes the first to incorporate the changes in the imminent Chapter 7 of DfT’s Traffic Signs Manual.

A further enhancement, believed to be a first for sign design software, is guidance on the permissible lettering size to use for each type of parking plate or other worded regulatory sign. SignPlot now also checks that distances are specified in accordance with Schedule 18 of the 2016 TSRGD, and has been brought up to date with many new symbols, including those for clean air zones and emergency lay-bys on smart motorways.

Simon Morgan, chairman of Buchanan Computing and original author of SignPlot commented “It was easy to update the software for the new Chapter 7, as SignPlot has been used to create the new diagrams in it. We had added “tiger tail” and other innovative lane indication signs over two years ago, before the 2016 TSRGD came into effect, so DfT was interested to hear what our rules were for their layout and spacing.”

The new software incorporates many minor improvements raised at the twice-yearly user group meetings, such as the option to show tile outlines around whole words instead of individual letters.

The structural design software, SignLoad, built into SignPlot and also available separately, was updated in early August. This now allows a percentage spare capacity to be reserved for a heavy variable message sign that might be subject to fatigue, and has more options for the printout and export to sign schedules in Excel.

Both SignPlot 3.50 and SignLoad Professional 3.45 are now ready to be downloaded from our website user area by those with current support contracts. The free Sign Illumination Tool has also been updated and can be found on our downloads page.
