On behalf of Transport Scotland, BEAR Scotland Ltd. operates the North East Trunk Road Unit. This covers the trunk network from the Kincardine Bridge in the south to Inverness, Aberdeen and Fraserburgh in the north.

One of the responsibilities of the trunk road operating company is the maintenance and improvement of traffic signing. Part of this work involves developing and implementing Route Signing Strategies. These are comprehensive initiatives to provide clear, concise and consistent road user information to current standards. ‘Crash friendly’ sign supports (also known as passively safe structures) are used whenever warranted, leading to road safety benefits.

The detailed sign design process utilises Buchanan Computing’s SignPlot software. On one major scheme this facilitated the cost effective and accurate design of over 120 signs along a 12-mile section of the A92 trunk road through Fife.

SignPlot continues to assist with new signing schemes on other routes including the M90/A90 Edinburgh to Aberdeen corridor and the A985.

John Crawford from BEAR Scotland Ltd welcomed the release of the enhanced SignPlot 2 program with its many new time saving features, greater flexibility and closer links to other software. He particularly valued the ability to specify the colour of any block of text, needed for certain road safety signs.
